What is a Thriller?

Triller is a genre of literature, film and television that uses suspense, tension and excitement as the main elements. The primary subgenres of thrillers are: mystery, crime and psychological thrillers. After the assassination of President Kennedy, political thriller and paranoid thriller films became very popular. We studied Thriller as a genre by looking at films such as Children of men and Shutter island. We looked at what aspects of the sequences we saw made us think that its such as tense diegetic music and dark clouds. We found that music was used a lot to build up tension and give the piece a little more suspens to it. Also we found out that different camera shots enable different reactions from the audience.camerawork is used to make sure that the audience always notices the small hints which class the film as a thriller. editing also character's reactions to thrilling occurrences throughout the film.

Another Idea for a horror Movie.

This idea will invlove a Peadophile, The first shot will be a computer screen with a mans hand clicking through a young girls pictures on facebook, there will be dramatic music to build up tension and suspense. Then the camera will cut to a point of view shot of the man looking at a girl playing on the swings. We then see him getting up and walking over to the girl the next cut will be to a newspaper with GIRL GOES MISSING on it as the headline. Then it will end. It will be dramatic and inhance the fears of the public over peadophiles. I plan to film the first part in the studio with lots of editing to make it realistic. The i will film the second part in an old part were the girls playing on location. The editing will be the hard part to make it tense and thrilling.

One Idea for a horror Movie

My Idea for a horror movie is for there to be an old lady who is really sweet and nice who lives in a small cottage in the middle of the countryside. The setting for the cottage will be in the woods down a deserted track so it will give the scary feel to it. The first shot will be of the women sowing, the lighting is dark and with only a few lamps, there are shadows and then the camera to a young little girl walking down the lane, there is tension with the music I will use and, as it cuts back to the women inside the cottage we see what she is sowing its, a young child which she has stuff. There will be high angle shots to show this and also the pace of the editing will be slow. She is sitting next to a fire place and just rocking back and forth, there is then another cut to the girl walking up the path you can see that she is coming to the house. Then we cut back to the women she has finished sowing and places the stuffed child on the mantelpiece, we can see that there are hundreds of stuffed children with heavy make up so they look like dolls. Then there’s a cut to the girl who is approaching the house you can see she is scared. The tension builds as she goes to knock on the door. The old lady opens this and pleasantly says come in with a big smile on her face. She looks out of the door either way closes it and we just hear this scream.

Denotation and Connotation

Having familiarised yourself with the meanings of these two words, work, in pairs or small groups on the images attached  Use the structure below to organise your findings:

Image
Denotation
Connotation
Still from Scream

A blonde girl, holding a phone to her ear looking at something/somebody through a window who is holding a knife and is wearing a white mask and a black cloak. She is dressed in a cream jumper, juxtaposition in clothes.

Innocent blonde girl in danger, is going to be killed by the person in the mask, they are dangerous.
Still from Psycho

A lady in a shower, wet, looking at something with a shocked expression on her face.

Something is scaring her/shocking her, signifying that danger is nearing.
Still from Gothika

A girl facing writing that is written on the wall, saying “Not One” in red writing. She is dressed in normal, plain clothing.

There is a message written in red which signifies blood, and danger suggesting death and murder.
Still from
 Friday 13th
A blonde woman dressed in dark clothes stood in an empty car park, facing a man who is far away and blurred from our vision.

The man who is unclear seems mysterious as we cannot see who he is. The open space and the man suggest to us that there is danger ahead.
Still from
The Exorcist
A girl with cuts all over her face, long red her, blood dripping from her mouth and eyes wide open that are just white and black with no colour. She is dressed in a white blouse.
The cuts on her face signify violence and blood. Her long red her suggests she is dangerous. Although she is dressed in the colour white which represents purity and innocence, there is a juxtaposition.
Still from
The Ring
A young girl sat on a chair in an empty room, looks clinical. She has long black hair that covers her pale face. Wearing a very white, clean dress and little girls shoes. A wire is near her.

The young girl looking pale, suggests that she is ill, signifying that she could be possessed by something evil. Again there is a juxtaposition between this and her innocent clothing.

Still from
Omen
A young boy stood in a black and white suit stood in between white crosses in a grassy field. He is wearing a black hat on his head, and he has his hands on his hips looking up towards this camera.

The stance that he is stood in shows us that he has confidence and power. There is a juxtaposition between the boys clothing and the white colours of the cross, signifying that he is evil, as white signifies purity.
Still from
It
A person with a painted face and fang like teeth. Red hair and green eyes. Placed on a black background.

The painting on the face signifies the figure of a clown, there is a dominant use of the colour red signifying blood and danger. They have their mouth open looking as if they are ready to bite something.
Still from
Halloween

A man looking over a staircase shot from a low angle, holding a knife and wearing a pale mask.

Him looking over the balcony and being shot from a low angle shows us that he is looking down at something and that he has the power and is superior. The knife suggests danger, and violence signifying that he is going to kill someone.
Still from
H2O
A man with a very white, pale face who is looking through a hole/porthole and a woman with a terrified expression on her face. There is a blue colouring within the shot.
His pale face suggests to us that he is ill or dead, as it is juxtaposed with her rosy coloured face looking alive. The use of blue colouring and a porthole reinforces the fact that they are on a boat.

What I Expect to see in Horror Movie.

Horror films are unsettling movies that strive to elicit the emotions of fear, disgust and horror from viewers. They often feature scenes that startle the viewer through the means of macabre and the supernatural, thus frequently overlapping with the fantasy and science fiction genres. Horrors also frequently overlap with the thriller genre.

Aspects which i expect to see
  • Dark rooms
  • Blood
  • mist
  • scary Noises
  • Open houses
  • Masks
  • Villian
  • Hero
  • Blonde Women getting Killed
  • Shadows
  • Weapons
These things are what i would expect to find in a horror movie, an example of this is Scream

Things that scare Me.

Rats- He may look cute but they carry things like the plage and i hate things running over my feet.

Ghost and Paranormal Activity- This fella doesnt really scare me but it i saw a white thing floating in the middle of the night i would be very scared and if anything happens which i cant explain i get scared. aaaaaaaaah.

Pitch Black- I hate the dark, i sleep with a night light.

Excluded house- Looks like the scream house this would scare me.

Terrorist- There very scary, i would be very scared if i came in contact with this jolly guys.

Prelim Post Production Blog - Editing.

To edit my Prelim task i needed to use Final Cut Pro as to link all the shot togeather in order for them to fit in and look realistic. In order to do this i accesed the sever and then i had to find my work check the sever in order to the edit the scene and then see if it had been safely stored.

Logging shots.
I decide to filter all of my shots, which had been kept in rushers bin. i wanted to find the best shots which would fit into my scene and make it run smoothly, the shots i rejected i lefted in the rushers bin these were the ones who just didnt fit with the story or werent as good as the others. The reason why i did this was because i wanted to get the best shots possible and once i came to editing it made it alot easier becuase i just had good shots rather than the bad ones.

Shot order.
For this it was very important to get all the shots togeather in order for them to make sense and make the scene and flow smoothly. To make my scene more interesting i decided to cut to different point of view this would enable a different propectous for the viewer and it would enharnce the scene. I filmed some other the shoulder shots and when i put them togeather in the right order it created a shot reverse shot i realised that i couldnt break the 180 degree rule because i knew it wouldnt look right so i used shot revesre shot in the right order so it would look right. Also i had to make all the shots in the right order as it would muck up the continuity.

Editing in Final Cut.
In the final aspects of editing i wanted to quicken up the pace in order to add more tension to the scene, also i wanted to use quick cuts and then at the end of the scene as the girl leaves to slow more emotion in the mans face. I wanted to change the pace because it gave more light and shade to my scene and make it more exciting. I also had to make saw that everything ran smoothly and nothing looked out of place so i checked it again and it seemed ok.

prelim task

To film my Preliminary task I choose to use the studio as my location as it would enable me to set the lights up how I wanted, I used a spotlight on my two actors so it would make shadows on the actors face and therefore create mystery and enhance the actors facial expressions. Also the studio was a big space so the actor I used could walk into the room as this would create a sense of purpose I took an active role in this as I did everything on my own I set up the lights how I wanted, I cast the actors who I thought would suit the roles on offer. I then set up the tripod as the actor I used was tall so it took a bit of time to adjust the tripod.

The first shot I filmed was a wide shot of the actors performing the scene this was because I wanted to establish the set and get an overall perspective of the scene. I then choose to do an over the shoulder shot of the actors face so I could get his facial expressions and I would film two over the shoulder on each actor so I could switch between them so I could get there reactions as well as there movements. The final shot I use was a real close up of the actors face so I could catch every twitch of movement in there face, it also showed the lighting shadow and enhanced there look. I stuck to the 180 degree rule as this is vital to film making and it made it look more professional. To make the sure the actors were ready I used the term standby and when I was ready to shoot I said action and Cut at the end of the scene this made it clear to the actors and made sure that they were ready for the scene.

Photoshop

In a few of our lessons we looked at using photoshop and all the different ways in which it could be used. We used a variety of images from different films and game posters etc. Some of the ones we looked at were:
  • Saw
  • Grand Theft Auto
  • Treasure Island
  • The A team
  • The Expedibles
  • Up
  • James Bond
  • Cloverfield
This is the image I made in photoshop by  using various tools.

We looked at how we could manipulate and put together these images to create one completley different image. I used the image of Saw and the Grand Theft Auto poster and manipulated these two images through the tools on Photoshop. Some of the tools we used were:
  • Stamp Clone
  • Lasso
  • Move tool
  • Brush tool
  • Colour replacement tool
  • Smudge tool
  • Burn tool
  • Spondge tool
All of these tools made our image look realistic and effective without looking like they had been manipulated or edited and made our posters looke like they were for the actual film advertising for a thriller/horror genre film.
