Account of shoot day

On Thursday the 3rd November it was our turn to film our music video which we had been working on for the last couple of months. To prepare we created a shooting schedule to give to our cast and production team this would enable no time wasting searching around for cast and we could just get into the shoot. We also had created a storyboard which mapped out our shots we were going to use on the day, Having this was a huge advantage on the day as it enable us to be prepared and know what shots to use at which time of the day, Obviously these weren’t set in stone but they gave us a good indication of which ones we would. Once we had all met we gave the cast a quick briefing before beginning on our performance aspect of the scene.

Unfourantly one of our band members was unable to attend during the day so our group had a quick discussion and we decided to go on with only 3 members of the band holly, Will and Otto. When I first saw the lights and the set I was really pleased and thought we could do a lot with this so when filming started we went with wide shots of the band before creating good and interesting close ups and mid shots to show of the musician skills and to make the audience griped. We decided to have holly on a swing, Swinging back and forth with her face getting in the camera this is to add a real hard hitting feel and to pump the audience up like the music suggest we should do. We also played high emphasis on the DJ will Bodner because it was a piece which the dj was very influential and will was giving a good performance so he gains good camera time. Also we can keep flashing back to him and holly. The lights were adding to the effect and I was very pleased.

The morning went really well and we gain all our shots Unfourantly our plans to film in the woods were dashed as the weather was awful therefore we had to improvise and decided to create the same effect of a girl tripping in a club in the studio which I feel work out well as all our extras who performance well dressed up as strange creatures. This added a surreal feel to the video and we decided to use a combo of close up and mid shots to grab the true essences of this so overall I was pleased with this. For the duration of the shoot I was in charge of sound, I enjoyed this task as it was important that the cast knew when the music would come in and it was vital they understood it so I was pleased with this. I also took the camera for a little while and believe I produced a good few shots which can be used in our final edit. We warped at 4 pm and I feel we all had a good productive day. Now for the editing.

codes and connvetions of Genre

Different types and styles of music are divided into genres - or categories - to show what style of music they are. The genre is reflected in their music videos via the editing, camerawork and mis-en-scene.

Our band, the Prodigy, belonging to various genres including electronica, synthpunk, rave, dance-rock and alternative rock.

In order to show this, we have chosen to represent/use the following things in our music video:
- a dark, sinister setting (shows it is not a sugary sweet pop video)
- the performers will be mainly in black/edgy clothes
- the props are going to contribute the hedonistic/pyschadelic atmosphere (unrealisitic and trippy like their from a dream)

Our camerawork will consist mainly of a lot of low angle and close up shots of our performers to show they have dominance. We will also use the camera hand held for a lot fo the video in order to create that grungy, dark, organic look.

The editing will be very fast cuts, slow and sped up motion.

storyboard

We decided to film our stroyboard and then edit it so we would get a rough idea of how our video would look and how each scene will fit in with each other and give us a guidline of shot to do during the shoot.

Digipaks

When researching digipaks for our product, We firtst realised how important the band name was as this would give them an identity which would be marketable and recongiseable throughout the coutnry. I decided to look at dance music album covers to see what other bands use to front there product.
In this cover there is only three colours which doesnt confuse or isnt to much for the audience, The name prodigy is written with a border and a different font to make the public recongnise them as a band. They have gone for a bright colour as there musics upbeat and loud. Using the fish on the front give it an a unique feel to it and gives it an edge to help appeal to the audience, Making the sea red is maybe a sign for danger and it gives them a dangerous edge to there music. This will also help them sell more records as on the self in the shop it will stand out and get peoples attention.

Another example i looked at is

On this cover it has Loud Noises in a big font and a bright colour to advertiste the name of the band which as soon as they pick up the digi pak stright away they are hit by the name of the band . Also on the back theres the name of the tracks, which gives the audience infomation about which songs are out. There is also a picture of the main band memeber but it is pink and slightly disjointed which may reflect there music and there gives the audiences a little taste of what to come.

Story Board

For our music video we decided to do a storyboard which would give us an indication of what shots we would you so we made a storyboard to help us with this and give us a guideline of what shots to use when we actrully come to film the video.

Costumes

Deciding our costumes was a difficult task as we had to style a vast number of people in two completely different scenes with different people. Also as our cast where young, we wanted them to be in style with the current teenage fashion which would make our video more up to date and appeal to a wider audience and make our video more beilevable
Performers for the band. for our main girl Holly we wanted to give her a rock chick edge but also give her sex appeal to memebers of the opposite sex to attract males to watch the video. This is the type of image we are aiming at as it describes
This is the sort of look we are going for. She is sexy and has a dark side to her which will fit in the track. Also we beileve our performer Holly will suit this image perfectly.

Thes 3 images show what we want to create a sexy and dark lead singer with dark eye make up to give her even more sexual attaction.

For the boys in the band we want to give an indie look to them but aslo quite a dark feel to them. We want them to be alternative aswell but cool looking to add a sexual attraction to the females who watch the video. This is the type of image we are going for is an indie/rock feel with an edge to make the band have an appeal to them. This is the sort of look were going for.

casting Process/Image

When we were given the task of casting for our thriller we wanted to find 6 main cast memebers and the have about 25 extras for our background in the party scene to make it look authentic and realistic like a proper rave.

Firstly we wanted to find a girl who could be the lead singer of the band, as the song is quite dark and the theme of the video is dark we chose Holly Finlay to be our lead singer, She has dark hair and we beileve we can make her up as a rock chic to good effect.
This is the type of image where going for holly as it is edgy and call and llinks into the genre of the music as it would appeal to the audience who are a fan of dance/ rock music. Also there is a bit of flesh of showing therefore this would add a sex attraction so we needed someone who could pull it off and we beileved holly would fit the role perfectly.

For our band we wanted a group of boys to support holly as the main girl as this give us a unqiue element to the band and therefore appeals to the audience. For our group of boys we wanted them to have an edge and we can dress them in rock outfits for them to look cool and young and virbant like our target audience, in the end we choose Hector, Walter, Otto and will bodner who we beileve have the right look and attitude for the role. This will appeal to the audience as they will fit into the type of music that that genreation listens to.
This is the sort of image were going for they look threatening and edgy and arent the typical boys in a band as offer a lot darker feel to the video and a rebelious streak which is inside many teenages and our target audience who tend to listen to this kind of music are useally reblious teens are therefore if the band look like they conform to this ideology then the audience will buy there music as they feel they relate to it. So the guys will pick we beileve can pull this as they all have a bad boy attitude so therefore they are apportaite to play the role.

After spending some time looking at different costumes and images i decide to create a image around the headshot of my band therefore i could get a good indication of how they would look on the shoot, After seeing this i decided to make the image of the band alot darker as therefore they would look more edgy and rebilious. So doing gave me a good example of how i could style my group.

Keith negus - Ideologies of the music industry.

Negus in his book producing pop identifies two different types of artists in the music industry. These ideologies shape the way in which the artists’ images and careers are developed, and the way that they are marketed towards specific target audiences

The organic ideology of creativity a real working act which would last the length of time and could get out on stage and perform in front of a large audience for a number of years. The band is naturalistic and nutured by the record label whilest given time to grow into something huge. Emphasis is given to album sales and profits are generated through a long period of time. Examples of these artist include:

The synthetic ideology of creativity A combinatorial approach to artists and material
Executives attempt to construct successful acts out of the artists and the songs at their disposal
The image of the artist is often constructed by the record company
The artist will be given a short time to prove their success before other combinations will be tried out. Examples of this include.

These artists are exmaples of Neguses theory about the two differnet types of artist the music industry promotes.

Profile of a target audience member

I beileve our target audience would be aged between 16-25. it would be played at parties and raves which reflexs why we decided on our video being a party and rave to appeal to the young generation.

This is the type of group who would be interested in this music video and it mirrors the type of teenagers our track and video would be aimed at.
Here is what a target audience memebers day would consist.
12pm:wake up and roll out of bed. Chuck on clothes which are laying on there floor and head down to breakfast or food which consist of leftovers of last nights dinner.
1pm:Head in very late for college where they would hang out with friends, Smoke and not listen in class.
4pm:Finnish school and head to a friends where they would chill out smoke and listen to music.
7pm: Get ready to go and have a few drinks this will be vodka based which they have purchased from the supermarket, Maybe with a fake id.
9pm:Start to drink heavily and head to a party of rave.
10pm:Party has started and it is in full swing everyone is drinking and some nacotics are being taken.
12pm:Everyone is raving and partying hard so people have past out and others are making out with each other.
3pm:Head home and past out on there bed.

This would be a typical weekend for our target audience and this is what our video is based on.

Profile of A target audience member

The audience my music video appeals to his a wide mainstream audience but mainly the younger generation, as the band will be good looking and fun they will get a lot of attention from young female fans who are into mainstream pop culture, the type of fans you would find at a bieber concert would love this video.

There would be mainly girl fans but the video as set in the 50s may also to appeal to there parents and they will buy the album for there children.

The girls will be at school in the upper years known as the tweens and would have posters up of the and on there walls therefore this adds extra revenue for the company who are behind the band.

The music the band would play will be catchy and fun so therefore it will also appeal to dancers as it may have a good beat to it and catchy lyrics.

A regular day for a fan of the band. Would be get:

7pm: Get up and get ready for school, they will put little make up on as they are young but still will want to look nice and older. And there mother would make them breakfast and they would take them to school, which shows they rely on there parents. On the way they will be playing there favourite band or singer which would be something like justin beiber or one direction.

9pm: They would arrive at school and be pleased to her friends and have a gossip and giggle over the boys, instead of paying attention to lessons she would be thinking of her favourite band and becoming famous.

1pm: Lunch time would consist of having fun with her friends playing games and chatting about celebritys.

4pm: After school she would have dance and singing lesson in a bid to become famous with all her friends and imagine shes on stage performing infront of thousands of people.

6pm: her mother would make her dinner and they would talk about her day with each other.

8pm: snuggle up in front of the Tv and watch programmes like the x factor and big brother.

10pm: Bed time.

Reponse to Music Video.

-The video must show the band as fun and unique, the music video is all about showing of the band and creating an image for the band to be protrayed by the public.

- The idea arrose of the band being dressed as the old people and then transforming into a young cool hip band in the 50s, this would show the band are up for a laugh and wouldnt take themself to serious.

-My classmates suggested a different choice of song as the songs i had chosen were to modernised and there had to pick a more 50s sounding song so this is what i will look into and chose a songs which the video reflects.

-Another idea was about the pace of the editing as i would protray the band as a fun cool and young band i had to have the right pace to it. So the editing would be fast pace and have a youthful feel to it.

-My classmates liked the idea of it being film first in colour and then into black and white which would give it a authentic feel and make the video unique.

Overall the feedback was postive and i got a good respones so i was pleased, the class offered me good ideas which could furthur my idea and i can incoperate them into my video to make it better..

Richard Dyer Star theory

According to Richard Dyers theory each pop star most have a star image which is created by the record company in order to appeal to a target audience. An image is A star is an image, not a real person, that is constructed (as any other aspect of fiction isout of a range of materials (eg advertising, magazines etc as well as films. The artist must be protreyed as super human and have the element of desire about them. They also tend to have these trates in them as this is what sells.Youthfulness
Rebellion
Sexual magnetism
An anti-authoritarian attitude
Originality
Creativity/talent
Aggression/anger
A disregard for social values relating to drugs, sex and polite behaviour
Conspicuous consumption, of sex, drugs and material goods
Success against the odds
This all helps the artists appeal and become an icon in the public. They must also be ordinary enough for the audience to relate to them but extraordinary by there talent and succes for the audience to look up to.
Here are some examples of stars.
Adele has an ordinary look but an extraorindary voice and the record company build on that so it gives hope to other girls that they can be succesfully without a sexualised look.

Britney spears offers sex appeal and therefore the record company draw on this.
Here are a boyband whose record label have created a wholesome family image that will appeal to a broad audicene and that you girls will fancy.

All of these artist have a certain star image which have been created in order for them to make money and Dyers theory is based on this.

Prelim task

For Our Music Video prelim task we we had to film a band from brighton, the music they played was country pop with a blues influence, as soon as i herd the music my brain was filled with ideas as they had a unique sound to them and a great look we could market in our video. We were split up into groups and given a section of the song to film. My group got the intro of the track which i was pleased with as we could really start it of with a bang and create some interesting shots which would show of the band.

As our part of the song was mostly intrsumental we decided to show of the bands musicans first before introducing the lead singer and the two back up singers, before we went into the studio we planned what shots we would do we wanted to make the video exciting so we would do a mixture of close ups and mid shots to show of the band. Once we got into the studio we started with a long shot of the band performing the song this gave us a view of the whole band performing and we could edit it with close ups to an authentic music video.

When each indivdual bit was introduced with focused on the musican who was pplaying that part and tried a number of different camera angles in order to show of the band. We also

Analyzing star image and a music video - Justin Bieber Baby

The artist Justin Bieber is portrayed as wholesome family star which will appeal to a wide mainstream audience and the tween age group. He is seen dancing in a bowling alley with a very innocent feel to it as he is trying to get the girl he likes. Even though beiber is chasing a girl there is no sexual element it is and the lyrics in the song back this up. He is dressed like a typical teenage boy and has the beiber trademark hair which is a key selling point in selling Beiber as a brand. As he is cute he appeals to a number of girls and in this video it enhances this as a lot of girls would be wishing they were beiber Baby. The video is very fun as there is lots of dancing in with beiber at the front to show he is the star. Bieber is a star who conforms to authority and establishment who is given a very cute and pure feel by the company he works for, thus the long floppy hair and baby face. He is very much a product of the modern day music industry and has been manufactured to suit the needs of young girls, he doesn’t give of a bad boy image and doesn’t have rippling muscles but still has the look of a teenage pin up. Which the company has used to make more money selling poster, toys, Lunchboxes etc.

The genre of the music falls into main stream pop it is a traditional up beat pop song with a catchy beat and the Baby will ring out in people’s ears after they have listened to the song and this will help audiences remember Bieber as an artist. The video conforms to what the audience expect to see in a pop video Bieber chasing a girl looking pretty and dancing giving the impression he is fun, also shows of Beiber as a dancer to add to his appeal of the young girls and a teen audience. However there is something in the video which subverts the stereotype Ludicrous who is a black rapper is portrayed in a innocent and mainstream fashion, wearing brightly coloured clothes and joining in on the fun at the bowling allay. However I think he just went for the pay check the company offered him and the need to appeal to a wider range of audience and doing a Beiber song would help him do this. It also makes the genre a little more R&B rather than your average pop music making Justin Bieber slightly more street than he looks.

The story the video is giving is Bieber a young teenage boy is looking to get the girl he wants he is chasing her and impressing her at a bowling allay using his dancing skills to do this. We are meant to be on his side in his quest to get the girl and feel for him as he is a young boy in love, which brings a sympathetic image to him and makes the viewers on his side, its also aimed at young who will fall in love with him as there are long camera shots on him giving him a lot of screen time and therefore enables girls to fancy him. He also has an accessibility about him as the cute boy next door who all the girls fancy and is innocent which the video portrays as well as him being fun. The main aim of the music company is to appeal to a widespread mainstream audience mainly teenage girls but also all young teenagers and an older audience, The song will be played on the radio and Bieber will give lots of interviews to get his face out there

Evaluation task 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Over the course of production from my prelim task until my finished opening sequence from my thriller I feel I have leant and progressed a lot in that period.

The task we were given of making an opening scene for a thriller was a lot more daunting and complex than my prelim task. Firstly we had to come up with our own ideas and thoughts on what would work as a sequence, where as for the prelim task we were given a basic script, I felt for the thriller I need to think for myself and become more creative which I believed I did. We had to create our own storyboard which would make sense and an idea that was doable. Once we had done that we had to get the actors and plan the day of filming with props and such rather than the prelim task which was just an afternoon. I believe I have become more organised and creative during the creation of it.

When it came to the first day of film I was able to use the skills which I leant in-between the prelim and the thriller, such as tracking shots, focus pulls and using a slow motion camera. All this I was unable to do in my prelim task as I need have the skills needed to do it so there once I had leant them in lesson I could use them in good effect. In my prelim task I used mostly over the shoulder and mid shots whereas in the thriller I used more complex camera angles and used things such as close ups and side shots as while which made the thriller more interesting to watch. I also feel I have leant more about directing the actions and telling them what to do as I am more confident of this so therefore I could director my actors and communicate what I wanted them to which may a huge help. In the prelim I was quite hesitant and nervous to tell people what to do so having that experience really helped.

When it came to editing I also feel that I have improved as my prelim task I feel was slightly jumpy and didn’t flow as well as I would of hoped, so therefore I put this right in my Thriller, also I leant how to add sound in and therefore this made my thriller more interesting and I am more skilled at adjusting the sound to make it work with the scene so I am pleased with that. Also I feel I put more detail in my editing looking for precise cuts to create a more polished feel to it. Also I leant about putting after effects in which I never knew before with this I was able to put in blood and muzzle flashes to therefore make my thriller more realistic rather than fake which was a huge boost to me. Overall I feel I have improved as a media student and film maker as I have leant some key skills which I used for my thriller

Evaluation Task 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Our Media Product Injustice would be aimed at a slightly older audience than the average film. As it is a complex psychological Thriller and i believe that the adult population would enjoy the film and uderstand what is going on. It will also be quite goory and mind controling designed to scare and shock the audience. Also it we want it to play on the mind of the audience as our lead George Spooner is controled by a mistery organisation. I believe that it wont be a mainstream blockbuster however i do believe that it could get national release and will appeal to more than just your average cinema goer. I also feel that the movie will pick up a lot of profit in DVD sales as its the type of movie which would be good on a saturday night. The reason why i have this believe and faith in DVD sales is many horror films make most if not all there revenue on DVD sales and though are film isnt horror it with still appeal to that sort of audience.

Evaluation task 2 How does your product represent particular social groups?

How does your product represent particular social groups?

Our thriller doesnt really represant particular social types as there are onl three characters in our scene, so therefore it was difficult to show this. However we wanted to give the sense of power and upper class air to our main character and his wife, this was done by having them live in a big house and them getting into a nice car. Also with there costumes it gave them a sense of importance as they were, smartly dressed so therefore they conformed to the stereotype of a powerful upper class couple. For our assassin we wanted to subvert the sterotype of the typical murderer, we wanted him to look slightly innocent and pick a young actor to play him so the audience wouldnt expect him to be the killer therefore it wouldnt represent the typical sterotype assassin.
